The first nine chapters of 1 Chronicles are not the most thrilling chapters in the Bible. The pages are filled with what we often refer to as the “begats” – so and so begat so-and-so who begat so-and-so and so on and so forth. It's a genealogical listing of over 900 people for nine full chapters, yet one man listed halfway through managed to stand out among the crowd. Throughout all of these chapters we look at basic familial relationships of hundreds of men and women, but in 1 Chronicles 4:9, we pause to look at the character of Jabez:
“Jabez was more honored than his brothers … Jabez called out to the God of Israel: ‘If only you would bless me indeed, extend my border, let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm, so that I will not experience pain.' And God granted his request” (1 Chronicles 4:9-10).
And from there the steady clip of the genealogical accounts resumes. So why was more attention given to Jabez than his 900-some relatives? Because he lived a life above average, and God is showing us that that is what He wants from us too.
If you aren’t sure where to start, here are some steps you can take to get out of the rut, live above average, and stand out among the crowd:
- Watch the message from Sunday sharing the three secrets behind every above average man or woman used by God.
- Develop a dream and pursue it. God made you for growth.
- Focus on God. Every gift, tool, and ability comes from Him.
- Pray like Jabez. Bold prayers bring powerful results.
