Main Idea: He names it Ebenezer (1 Samuel 7)

Summary
After the Ark's return, Samuel challenged the Israelites to get rid of their idols and truly commit to God, which they did by gathering at Mizpah to fast and confess their sins. When the Philistines attacked during this spiritual revival, Samuel prayed for Israel, and God responded with thunder that confused the Philistines, allowing Israel to defeat their enemies. Samuel then set up a memorial stone called "Ebenezer" (meaning "stone of help") to remember God's faithfulness, and he continued to judge Israel wisely for many years, traveling between cities to bring justice and guidance to the people.

Review Questions
  1. What did Samuel ask the Israelites to do before gathering at Mizpah, and why was this an important first step in their revival?
  2. What was the significance of the "Ebenezer" stone that Samuel set up, and what does its name tell us about how the Israelites viewed God's role in their victory?

Main Idea: God Restores His People (1 Samuel 7)

Summary
After twenty years of Philistine domination, Samuel led Israel in spiritual reformation at Mizpah, where they fasted, poured out water symbolizing repentance, and confessed their idolatry. When the Philistines mobilized against this gathering, Samuel offered a sacrifice and interceded for Israel, prompting God to respond with thunderous intervention that routed the enemy and enabled Israel's decisive victory. Samuel commemorated this deliverance by erecting an "Ebenezer" stone, and subsequently served as Israel's circuit judge, administering justice throughout the land while maintaining a central altar to the Lord at his home in Ramah.

Review Questions
  1. What can we learn from the way Samuel led the people through steps of repentance (fasting, pouring water, confession), and how might these steps help us in our own spiritual lives today?
  2. The story shows that Israel's return to God led to victory over their enemies. How do you see this connection between spiritual commitment and practical success working (or not working) in your own experience?
