Kids

Main Idea: Samuel Anointed David (1 Samuel 16)

Summary
Saul didn’t listen to God, so he couldn’t be king of Israel anymore. God told Samuel to go to Bethlehem to find a new king for Israel. Samuel met seven of Jesse’s sons, but God didn’t choose any of them. God chose David, a young shepherd, to be the new king.

Review Questions
  1. What is different about what God sees in people from what humans see?
  2. What made David a surprising choice to be the future king of Israel?

Students

Main Idea: God cares about the condition of our hearts. (1 Samuel 16:1-13)

Summary
God tells Samuel to anoint a new king from Jesse's family in Bethlehem, but when Samuel sees Jesse's impressive older sons, God reminds him that He looks at the heart, not outward appearance. David, the youngest son who was out tending sheep, is chosen and anointed as the future king of Israel. The Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David from that day forward.

Review Questions
  1. Why do you think God chose David, the youngest brother who was just a shepherd, instead of his older, stronger-looking brothers?
  2. What are external things the world places value on? What sort of internal things does God place value on?

Adults

Main Idea: God always looks at the heart over external qualities. (1 Samuel 16:1-13)

Summary
In 1 Samuel 16, God rejects Saul as king and sends Samuel to Bethlehem to anoint one of Jesse's sons as the future king. Samuel initially considers the older, more impressive-looking brothers but God reminds Samuel that He looks at the heart, not outward appearances. When young David, the shepherd boy, is brought in from the fields, God confirms he is the chosen one, and Samuel anoints him with oil, causing the Spirit of the Lord to come powerfully upon David.

Review Questions
  1. Similar to how God looks past the exterior to the heart, what sort of things should we be looking past in people, and what sort of things should we be looking for in them?
  2. David was anointed as king but continued serving as a shepherd for years before actually taking the throne. What does this teach us about how God often prepares us for future roles through seemingly ordinary or humble circumstances in our present situations?
