Review Questions
  1. Why did David want to build God a temple?
  2. What special promise did God make to David?

Students

Main Idea: God will never break His promise to us. (2 Samuel 5-7)

Summary
David becomes king over all of Israel and captures Jerusalem, making it the capital city. He brings the sacred Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem with great celebration. Realizing he was in a great palace, but God’s ark of the Covenant was kept in a tent, David wanted to build God a temple. God tells David He doesn’t need a temple. God then makes a special promise to David that his family will always have someone ruling as king, and David responds with a heartfelt prayer of gratitude.

Review Questions
  1. Why do you think David felt uncomfortable living in a fancy palace while God's ark was kept in a simple tent?
  2. What does David’s prayer reveal about his heart? What do your prayers reveal about yours?

Adults

Main Idea: As God’s people, we can be assured of God’s promises. (2 Samuel 7)

Summary
David became king over all Israel and established Jerusalem as both the political capital and religious center by bringing the Ark of the Covenant there. When David expresses his desire to build a permanent temple for God, feeling it inappropriate that he dwells in a palace while the Ark remains in a tent, God declines the offer but affirms David's heart. Instead, God establishes the Davidic Covenant, promising that David's dynasty will endure forever and that his descendant will build the temple, to which David responds with humble worship and thanksgiving.

Review Questions
  1. God's response to David reveals that He values the heart behind the offer more than the actual construction of a building. What does this tell us about the things we bring to God?
  2. God’s promise to establish a people and to redeem them through the line of David was fulfilled in Jesus Christ through His death and resurrection. How should God’s faithfulness to His promises encourage repentance?
