Main Idea: Although He is high above us, God desires to dwell with us. (1 Kings 8)

Summary
King Solomon dedicates the magnificent Temple he built in Jerusalem as God's special dwelling place on earth. Even though God is so great that not even the heavens can contain Him, He chooses to come down and fill the Temple with His presence so He can be close to His people. Solomon prays that God will always hear the prayers of anyone who comes to this holy place, showing that the all-powerful God of the universe actually wants to have a relationship with us, ordinary people.

Review Questions
  1. Solomon said that even "the highest heavens cannot contain" God, yet God chose to fill the Temple. How can knowing that God is so big and powerful, yet He cares about the small details of our everyday lives be encouraging and motivating?
  2. Read 1 Corinthians 3:16. Knowing how much effort, time, and honor Solomon put into the temple, how should that change the way we live when we know we are God’s temple now?

Adults

Main Idea: God desires to dwell with His people. (1 Kings 6-8)

Summary
In 1 Kings 6-8, Solomon constructs the magnificent Temple according to God's detailed specifications. After the Temple's completion, Solomon dedicates it by bringing the Ark of the Covenant into the Most Holy Place. Solomon's prayer acknowledges the profound mystery that while the infinite God cannot be contained even by the heavens, He graciously chooses to establish His presence in this earthly house to be with His people. We can’t get to God, so God came to us.

Review Questions
  1. Why do you think God desired such an elaborate physical structure when He doesn't actually need it?
  2. When we read in 1 Corinthians 3:16 that we are God’s temple, with what we read in 1 Kings in mind, what should be the implications of that in our lives?
