Faith Talk – September 28, 2025

Faith Talks are designed to help you keep the conversation going beyond Sunday morning. Use this guide with your family or friends to reflect on the sermon and Life Group lesson, pray together, and put God’s Word into practice. Think of this guide as a starting place—then let God shape the conversation.

Sermon

Title: The Dynamic of Our Fellowship

Scripture: 1 John 1:5-10

Overview: In this passage, John emphasizes that God is light and in Him there is no darkness at all. Fellowship with God and with one another cannot exist where sin is hidden or excused. Instead, walking in the light requires honesty about our sin and confidence in God’s promise to forgive and cleanse us through Jesus Christ.

Main Points:
  • The Illumination of Our God — God is light in His person, His purity, and His purpose.
  • The Indication of Our Fellowship — True fellowship is revealed in both our words and our walk.
  • The Liberation From Our Sin — Through confession, God’s faithful character, and His cleansing, we are set free.

Discussion Questions:
For Kids
  • Why do you think John says God is light?
  • What happens if we try to hide our sin instead of telling God about it?
  • How does Jesus help us when we mess up?

For Students & Adults
  • How would you explain what it means that “God is light, and there is absolutely no darkness in Him”?
  • In what ways can our words and walk either strengthen or damage our witness?
  • Why is confession essential to our fellowship with God and with others?

Application: Take time this week to honestly examine your heart. Ask God to show you any sin you may be hiding, confess it to Him, and walk in the light of His forgiveness.

Life Group

Scripture: 1 Kings 20-22; 2 Kings 1

Christ/Gospel Connections:
All of Scripture points back to Jesus. In our study each week, every age group’s lesson includes a note about how the message connects to Christ. Use these Christ/Gospel Connections as a springboard for meaningful discussion about who Jesus is and what He has done for us.

Preschool – Ahab disobeyed God and was punished. We deserve punishment for our sin, but when we trust in Jesus, God does not give us the punishment our sins deserve. Jesus died on the cross so we can have forgiveness and life with God forever.

Kids – Ahab was a disobedient, greedy, and stubborn king who refused to lead Israel in the ways of the Lord. Jesus, the Good Shepherd, always obeyed God and laid down His life for us. Anyone who follows Him will dwell with God forever.

Students – Jesus is “the way the truth and the life” (John 14:6). Every word Jesus spoke pointed to the truth. Only through accepting Jesus’s words as truth can we experience a restored relationship with God the Father.

Adults – Ahab, a thief, a murderer, and one of the most wicked kings in Israel’s history, had earned God’s judgement. Like Ahab, we all have earned death as the wages for our sin, but those who humble themselves before the Lord, who repent of their sin and believe in Jesus, will never be condemned and will receive God’s gift of eternal life with Him.

Discussion Questions:
For Kids
  • What happened when Ahab disobeyed God?
  • How is Jesus a better leader than Ahab?

For Students & Adults
  • What does Ahab’s story teach us about the danger of pride and disobedience?
  • How does Jesus offer us the humility and obedience that Ahab lacked?
  • What steps can you take to walk in humility and stay close to God?

Pray Together

  • Thank God for His mercy and forgiveness through Jesus.
  • Commit to walking in the light by confessing sin quickly and trusting God’s grace.
  • Ask God to help you live with humility and honesty before Him and others.

Activity

Light vs. Darkness

Supplies:
  • a flashlight or lamp
  • a dark room

Instructions:
Turn off the lights and talk about how hard it is to see in the dark. Then switch on the flashlight or lamp and notice how the light pushes the darkness away. Discuss how walking in God’s light changes the way we live compared to walking in darkness.
