Sermon
Title: The Privilege of Being a Child of God
Scripture: 1 John 3:1-10
Overview: John reminds believers of the incredible love God has lavished on us by making us His children. Through faith in Jesus Christ, we are no longer defined by sin or separation but by belonging to God’s family. John contrasts the children of God with the children of the devil, showing that those who truly belong to God will live in righteousness, purity, and love. God’s love doesn’t just change our status—it transforms our character and gives us hope for the future.

Main Points:
- Our Privilege: We have the privilege of being called God’s children, not by physical birth but through spiritual rebirth. We have been chosen, adopted, and made heirs with Christ.
- Our Potential: As God’s children, we look forward to the day we will be like Christ when He returns. Our present lives are shaped by that future hope.
- Our Purity: Those who belong to God pursue holiness. The evidence of being God’s child is seen in righteous living and genuine love for others.
Discussion Questions:
For Kids
- What does it mean to be part of God’s family?
- How can we show others that we belong to Jesus?
- Why is it good news that God forgives our sins and makes us His children?
For Students & Adults
- How does knowing you are a child of God affect the way you view yourself and others?
- Why is purity an important part of living as a child of God?
- What are some practical ways we can reflect our Father’s character in daily life?
Application: Take time this week to thank God for adopting you into His family through Christ. Reflect on areas where you might not be living like His child, and ask Him to shape your words, actions, and heart to reflect His holiness and love.
Life Group
Scripture: 2 Kings 17
Christ/Gospel Connections:
All of Scripture points back to Jesus. In our study each week, every age group’s lesson includes a note about how the message connects to Christ. Use these Christ/Gospel Connections as a springboard for meaningful discussion about who Jesus is and what He has done for us.
Preschool – When the people in Israel did not listen to God, God let them be taken away. We sometimes do not listen to God too, but Jesus took our punishment so we can be with God forever.
Kids – The kingdom of Israel was destroyed because of their sin. We all sin against God and deserve death, but God sent Jesus to die in our place. Because of Jesus, those who trust in Him will never be removed from God’s presence.
Students – Because Jesus has revealed Himself to us as our greatest treasure and source of true joy, we seek to identify and put away the various idols in our lives to show others the goodness of God.
Adults – Sin leads to disaster and death. Trusting and following God is necessary for life. Trusting and following Him leads to a fulfilled life here and in eternity.
