Title: Our Sacred Obligation
Scripture: 1 John 3:11-24
Overview: John reminds believers that love is not optional—it’s essential. Love is the defining mark of those who belong to God. It’s not mere emotion or words, but selfless action that reflects the heart of Christ. The absence of love exposes spiritual emptiness, but genuine love—rooted in the gospel—shows we have passed from death to life.

Main Points:
- The Plea to Love: We are commanded to love one another. Love is the standard equipment of every believer—it’s not optional but essential to authentic faith.
- The Picture of Love: Jesus is the ultimate example of love. His sacrificial death shows us what real love looks like—voluntary, vicarious, and victorious.
- The Practice of Love: True love is active, not theoretical. It meets needs, serves others, and expresses the gospel in both deed and truth.
Discussion Questions:
For Kids
- What are some ways we can show love to people at home or at school?
- How did Jesus show His love for us?
- When is it hard to show love? What can we do then?
For Students & Adults
- Why does John say love is a command, not a choice?
- How does Jesus’ sacrifice shape the way we love others?
- Where do you struggle most to love others in action rather than in words?
- What keeps believers from loving with the same selflessness Jesus showed?
Application: Identify one person or situation where you can put love into action this week. Ask God to help you move from feeling love to showing love through a specific act of service, generosity, or forgiveness.
Pray Together
- Thank God for showing perfect love through Jesus.
- Commit to practicing love in truth and action this week.
- Ask God to help you see others through His eyes and to make His love visible through your words and deeds.
