Sermon
Title: The Road Back Home
Scripture: Luke 15:11-24
Overview: Jesus tells the story of a son who left his father’s home in search of freedom but found himself trapped by the consequences of his choices. When the son recognized his sin and returned home, he discovered that his father was ready to receive him with compassion. No place, problem, or predicament can keep us from returning to our loving Father. God welcomes those who turn to Him, restoring them through His grace.
Big Idea: There is no place, problem, or predicament that will prohibit you from returning to our Loving Father.
Discussion Questions:
For Kids
For Students & Adults
Application: Consider where you may have wandered from God through a choice, habit, attitude, or attempt to live independently of Him. Be honest about the result, confess your sin, and take one concrete step toward obedience. Return with confidence in the Father’s compassion rather than waiting until you feel worthy.

Discussion Questions:
For Kids
- Why did the younger son decide to return home?
- What did the father do when he saw his son coming?
- What does this story teach us about God when we sin and ask Him to forgive us?
For Students & Adults
- What promises of freedom or pleasure can tempt us to move away from God?
- How do contriteness, confession, and commitment help us understand genuine repentance?
- What part of the father’s response most clearly reveals God’s heart toward those who return to Him?

Life Group
Scripture: Luke 11, 18
Christ/Gospel Connections:
All of Scripture points back to Jesus. In our study each week, every age group’s lesson includes a note about how the message connects to Christ. Use these Christ/Gospel Connections as a springboard for meaningful discussion about who Jesus is and what He has done for us.
Preschool – Jesus told people to keep praying. God is a good Father. The best prayer we can pray is to say we are sorry for our sin. Jesus died and came back to life so we can be close to God.
Kids – Jesus taught people to keep praying. God is a good Father who will give His people what they need. The most important prayer we can pray is to tell God we have sinned and ask for His forgiveness. Jesus died on the cross and rose again so sinners can be made right with God.
Students – Jesus taught us to pray with dependance on God, recognizing our physical and spiritual needs, which only He can supply; faith in God, knowing He is our good and loving Father; and with persistence, remembering He is righteous. It is through the death and resurrection of Jesus that we have access to the Father so that we can pray in faith.
Adults – Jesus’s life was full of prayer and gives us an example to follow in praying for the right things because He desires to bestow on us the good gifts of God. Jesus’s best gift is salvation that He give us freely when we trust in Him.

Instructions:
Draw a simple road leading toward a house. Along the road, write the words Recognize, Return, and Receive. Under “Recognize,” write something that can pull people away from God. Under “Return,” write a prayer of confession or a step of obedience. Under “Receive,” list what the father gave his returning son in Luke 15:20–24 and what each gift reveals about the father’s welcome. Finish by thanking God that, through Jesus, the road back to our loving Father is always open to those who repent and trust Him.
