Faith Talk – September 6, 2026

Sermon
Title: The Parable of the Great Banquet
Scripture: Luke 14:15-24
Overview: Jesus compared the kingdom of God to a great banquet prepared by a generous host. Although the invited guests had been told to come, they allowed work, possessions, and relationships to become excuses for staying away. The host then extended his invitation to people who never expected to receive it. God freely invites people into His kingdom, but His invitation requires a personal response. No excuse is sufficient for ignoring His call to come.
Big Idea: No excuse will be sufficient for ignoring the invitation to coming to celebrate in the Kingdom of God.

Application: Consider whether work, possessions, relationships, or personal priorities are competing with your response to God. Identify one excuse you have been making, confess it to God, and take a specific step of obedience this week. Look for an opportunity to extend God’s invitation to someone who may feel overlooked or unwelcome.

All of Scripture points back to Jesus. In our study each week, every age group’s lesson includes a note about how the message connects to Christ. Use these Christ/Gospel Connections as a springboard for meaningful discussion about who Jesus is and what He has done for us.
Preschool – People who hear and believe God’s Word will grow to be like Jesus and share His good news with others.
Kids – Not everyone who hears about Jesus believes in Him. Some people don’t understand the gospel, and some people care more about the things of this world than they do God’s kingdom. But people who believe in Jesus and follow Him will grow to be like Him and will share His good news so others can believe, too.
Students – Scripture teaches us that Jesus is the way to salvation, and following Him by faith with the Holy Spirit will lead to true transformation.
Adults – Jesus used parables to describe the nature of God's kingdom on earth.
Word of the kingdom is spread widely but received differently based on the condition of one's heart. For those with hearts of fertile soil, the Word produces extraordinary fruitfulness, causing the kingdom to grow throughout the world. When Jesus returns, we will experience the fullness of God's kingdom.

Pray Together
- Thank God for inviting us into His kingdom through Jesus and for giving us His Word, which reveals the truth and transforms our hearts.
- Commit to setting aside our excuses, receiving God’s Word with faith, and responding obediently to His invitation.
- Ask God to remove the distractions that keep His Word from taking root, produce lasting fruit in our lives, and help us invite others to know and follow Jesus.

Instructions:
Give each person a piece of paper and ask them to create an invitation with the words, “You are invited into God’s kingdom through Jesus.” On the back, write one excuse or distraction that can make it difficult to respond to God. Discuss what it would look like to set that excuse aside. Place the invitations in envelopes as reminders that God’s invitation is personal and requires a response. End by naming someone your family or group can encourage or invite to church this week.
