Sermon
Title: The Critical Need of Leadership
Scripture: 1 Kings 12:1-7
Overview: After Solomon’s death, the people of Israel came to his son Rehoboam with a request. If he would lighten the burden Solomon had placed on them, they would serve him. Rehoboam asked the older men who had advised his father for counsel. They urged him to serve the people and speak kindly to them. Their advice offered a path toward the people’s loyalty, but Rehoboam still had to decide whether he would follow it.

Application: Think of one person affected by a decision you make at home, work, school, or church. Before you decide, listen to that person’s needs. Ask God to help you respond with wisdom and kindness.

Life Group
Scripture: Matthew 9; Mark 5; Luke 8
Christ/Gospel Connections:
All of Scripture points back to Jesus. In our study each week, every age group’s lesson includes a note about how the message connects to Christ. Use these Christ/Gospel Connections as a springboard for meaningful discussion about who Jesus is and what He has done for us.
Preschool – Jesus healed people and gave life to the dead. He showed He is God’s Son, the Savior. Jesus died and rose again so we can be forgiven of our sins and have life with God forever.
Kids – Jesus healed people and raised the dead to life. By doing this, He showed that He is the Messiah, the Son of God. When Jesus died on the cross and rose again, He made the way for people to be healed from something even greater than disease or death. He made the way for us to be forgiven of our sin and have eternal life.
Students – Jesus responded to those who came to Him in faith for physical healing. In a greater way, Jesus forgives and restores all who come to Him in faith for salvation from sin.
Adults – Jesus demonstrated His divine power by healing and resurrecting others. His power to physically heal and resurrect points to His power to spiritually heal and resurrect souls.

Pray Together
- Thank God for Jesus’ power, compassion, and gift of new life.
- Commit to listening to others and serving them with kindness.
- Ask God to help each person in your family bring their needs to Jesus and trust Him.

Instructions:
Have each person name one way someone could help them this week. Write the requests down, then let each family member choose one way to serve someone else. At the end of the week, talk about what you learned by listening before acting.
