Faith Talk - September 8, 2024

Sunday: September 8, 2024
Series: Fasting: Biblical and Beneficial
Sermon: Prayer's Role in Fasting

Scripture

Philippians 3:7-8 - But everything that was a gain to me, I have considered to be a loss because of Christ. More than that, I also consider everything to be a loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. Because of him I have suffered the loss of all things and consider them as dung, so that I may gain Christ.

Summary

This morning, we wrapped up our series on fasting as we looked at the role of prayer when we fast. In our prayers, we should remember:

  1. Who we're speaking with – God is not our vending machine, nor should we speak with Him as if we got His voicemail.
  2. Our attitude when we come before God – James 4:1-10

At the end of the day, our goal as Christians should be to be "contently discontent," meaning Jesus is all we want, but we want more of Him.

Discussion

  1. How does being faithful to God encapsulate so much of what it means to be a Christian?
  2. Do you think food is a place you go to for comfort?
  3. How does prayer and fasting align our hearts with God's?
  4. With Philippians 3:1-10 in mind, how can Paul be a model for us in our perspective of life and what we work for?

Pray Together

God, thank you for giving us the instruction to pray and fast so that we might draw closer to you. I ask that you would help us to not neglect the gift of prayer. We commit to praying and listening more consistently, only finding contentment in You, as well as seeking you more fervently. In your name we pray, Amen.
