Sermon: God’s Image in the Home

Scripture

Genesis 1:27-28a –  So God created man in his own image; he created him in the image of God; he created them male and female. God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it.

Summary

In our new series, Home for Christmas, we began by looking at God’s original design for the home. In the beginning, when humankind was made, we were created with the need for relationships, the need for community, the need to be a part of a home. Home is where we find the connection with the family and fellow believers God has placed in our lives.

From the very beginning, God’s first lesson to mankind was that it’s not good to be alone. A beautiful lesson we learned is how our relationships in the home are in the image of the relationships of the triune God.

  • God: Father, Son, Holy Spirit
  • Home: Husband, Wife, Children

We also learned how our relationships in the community, especially in the church, are designed to reflect the image of our triune God.

  • Community: God, You, Others

Even if your home does not reflect God’s original design, God invites you into true triune fellowship with Him and into the triune fellowship of the community and the church.

All of us have experienced the result of sin entering the world, marring God’s image and plan for the home and community. As in the beginning, God’s love prompted action. In His love for the world, He used a family to bring forth a Son on Christmas morning who would bridge the brokenness of sin between God and man and man and community (Luke 2:1-16).

Discussion

  1. When we think of being Home for Christmas, many different images and experiences come to mind. What does it mean to you to be home for Christmas?
    • Share a memory of a time being home for Christmas that was meaningful for you.
  2. Discuss how you, in your place in the family (husband, wife, child), can reflect the image of God.
    • What does that look like for you personally? What does this look like together for those you share a home with?
  3. This community, and especially the church, also reflects the Trinity as God loves us, we love God, and we love one another. What does this look like for you at Connection Point Church?
    • Discuss how your fellowship with the believers at Connection Point reflects your fellowship with God.

Pray Together

Father, thank You for Your beautiful triune design for the home, family, and church community. We are thankful and blessed to be made in Your image, to experience Your image in the home, and to reflect Your image to the world. I ask You to show us where we have fallen short of Your image. Convict us for Your glory to display Your image in our home and church. We commit to Jesus Christ, the baby born on Christmas morning, who came to renew the broken image in us and restore Your image in our home. In the name of Jesus, we pray, Amen.
