Main Idea: God Provided for His People (Exodus 15-17)

Summary
  • God led His people through the wilderness by a pillar of cloud and fire. As the people traveled, they complained about being hungry and thirsty.
  • God performed miracles and provided His people with water, manna, and quail.
  • God commanded His people to rest on the seventh day of each week. This day was called the Sabbath.

Review Questions
  1. What was special about the Sabbath?
  2. Why can we trust God to provide for our needs?

Students

Main Idea: Worship and trust are right responses to God’s provision. (Exodus 16:2-5, 8-20)

Summary
Did you know complaining shrinks the hippocampus–the part of the brain that helps with problem solving and critical thinking? Did you know intentionally focusing on things to be grateful for and writing them down (1) fires new neural connections to the bliss center, (2) enhances dopamine and serotonin, (3) reduces fear and anxiety by regulating stress hormones, and (4) rewires your brain and outlook because of the positive line of thinking?

The Israelites complained of food and water, which shows their lack of faith in God’s provision. Gratitude is the opposite of complaining. We should be people who seek things to be grateful for, not ones who seek things we should be entitled to. When we find ways to remain grateful, we’ll also remain fixed on God’s faithfulness because that is something we can ALWAYS be grateful for.

Review Questions
  1. What was God’s response to the Israelites' complaints? What would your response have been?
  2. God was clearly keeping very close watch over the Hebrew people over all the ways He was protecting them, guiding them, and showing His power to them. Why do you think they had forgotten so quickly?
  3. Why do you think it seems to take more effort to focus on being grateful than to complain?

Adults

Main Idea: God is our Provider, giving us our daily bread and all we need. (Exodus 16:1-12)
