Scripture: Joshua 10

Preschool

Main Idea: Taking the Land (Joshua 10-11)

Summary
  • God was with His people in the Promised Land. They made peace with the people who lived in Gibeon.
  • One day, five kings came to fight the people of Gibeon. Joshua and his army went to protect the people. The kings’ armies ran away, but God sent a hailstorm to stop them. The battle was not over!
  • Joshua needed more time to win. God made the sun and moon stay still in the sky. The sun stood still for almost a whole day until the Israelites won the battle.

Review Questions
  1. What did God do to give Joshua more time in battle?
  2. Who is mighty enough to make the sun stand still?

Kids

Main Idea: Taking the Land (Joshua 10-11)

Summary
  • When five enemy kings fought against Israel and the Gibeonites, God made Israel’s enemies confused and sent a hailstorm.
  • God answered Joshua’s prayer to make the sun stand still so His people could finish the battle and win.
  • Joshua led the Israelites to take all the land, and God’s people had rest from war.

Review Questions
  1. How did God show His power and fight for His people?
  2. How has Jesus defeated our enemies: sin and death?

Students

Main Idea: God’s power is evident in impossible situations. (Joshua 10)

Summary
In Joshua 10, the Israelites, led by Joshua, fight against a coalition of five Amorite kings who have attacked their ally, Gibeon. God helps the Israelites win by sending large hailstones upon their enemies and even making the sun stand still to give Israel more time to defeat their foes. After the victory, Joshua captures and executes the five kings, then conquers several more cities in southern Canaan as part of God's plan to give the Promised Land to Israel.

Review Questions
  1. What did Joshua ask God to do, and what does this reveal about Joshua’s faith?
  2. The Israelites protected the Gibeonites even though they had been tricked by them earlier. When is it hard to keep your promises to someone who hasn't been completely honest with you?

Adults

Main Idea: God fights for His people and is faithful in keeping His promises. (Joshua 11)

Summary
In Joshua 11, northern Canaanite kings unite under Jabin of Hazor to fight against Israel with a massive army including horses and chariots. God reassures Joshua not to be afraid, and the Israelites defeat this northern coalition completely, burning Hazor but keeping the spoils and livestock from other cities as commanded. Over a long period, Joshua systematically conquers the entire promised land, defeating a total of thirty-one kings, with only the Gibeonites making peace with Israel.

Review Questions
  1. Joshua was obedient to follow God's instructions completely, even when it took "a long time" to finish conquering the land. What helps you stay committed to doing the right thing when it takes longer than expected?
  2. How does faith in God’s promises protect us from fear?
