Sermon: My Hour Has Come: Serve One Another

Scripture

John 13:14-15 – So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done for you.

Summary

In John 13, Jesus demonstrates profound humility and servant leadership by washing His disciples' feet during their final meal together before His crucifixion. This act of washing dirty feet—normally reserved for the lowest servant—dramatically illustrates how followers of Christ should relate to one another. Jesus explains that while salvation (being "bathed") happens once, believers need ongoing cleansing from daily sin (foot washing), representing sanctification through confession.

By performing this humble task, Jesus establishes a pattern for His disciples to follow after His death and departure—they must serve one another in ways that encourage confession, accountability, and spiritual growth. The passage challenges believers today to set aside status and pride to help fellow Christians maintain fellowship with God through humble service and loving accountability.

Two Primary Lessons:
  1. Follow the example of Jesus and be a humble servant to those you lead. Be a servant to those who follow you.
  1. Serve one another toward humble and authentic confession of daily sin, repentance, and faithfulness to Christ.

When we humbly confess to another our sins before Christ, it keeps us humble to be servant leaders of those we lead to fulfill the mission of Christ.

Pray Together

Heavenly Father, thank You for the example of Jesus who humbled Himself to serve others, even knowing one would betray Him. We are grateful that You cleanse us completely through salvation and continue to wash away our daily sins when we confess them. We ask for Your help to overcome our pride and selfishness so we can truly serve others as Jesus served His disciples. Give us the courage to have honest conversations that help each other grow spiritually. We commit to following Christ's example by putting others before ourselves and serving in ways that might be uncomfortable, but that draw people closer to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Family Activity

Family Foot Washing Service

Create a Family Foot Washing Service where you take turns serving each other. Fill a basin with warm water and have towels ready. As each person washes another family member's feet, they can share something they appreciate about that person. For younger children who might find foot washing strange, you could adapt this to hand washing instead.

Afterward, discuss how it felt to serve and be served, and talk about ways your family can serve one another toward confession and repentance of sin.

This hands-on experience helps children understand Jesus' lesson about humble service in a memorable way.
