Main Idea: Deborah Led Israel (Judges 4-5)

Summary
  • A judge named Deborah lead God's people. One day, Deborah told a man named Barak that God wanted him to gather an army to fight against a king.
  • Deborah, Barak, and an army went to meet the king's army. Deborah said, "Go Barak! God is with you!" Barak's army won the battle!
  • Sisera, the leader of the enemy army, ran away to the tent of a woman named Jael. When Sisera fell asleep, Jael bravely helped God's people by stopping Sisera.

Summary
In Judges 4-5, the Israelites are being bullied by King Jabin and his army commander Sisera, so God raises up a wise woman named Deborah to be their judge. Deborah works with a military leader named Barak to defeat Sisera's army, but in the end, a woman named Jael becomes the hero by killing Sisera when he hides in her tent. Chapter 5 is a victory song that Deborah and Barak sing to celebrate how God helped them win the battle against their enemies.

Main Idea: God works powerfully through His people to accomplish His purposes. (Judges 4)

Summary
In Judges 3:12-5:31, the Israelites are oppressed by King Eglon of Moab until God raises up Ehud, who assassinates Eglon with a hidden sword and leads Israel to victory over the Moabites. After Ehud's death, the Israelites fall into sin again and are oppressed by the Canaanites under King Jabin and his army commander Sisera until God raises up the prophetess Deborah and the military leader Barak to defeat them. The section concludes with the Song of Deborah and Barak, a poetic celebration of their victory, including a detailed account of how a woman, Jael, killed Sisera while he slept in her tent.
