The Last Supper

Read

Summary

This passage depicts one of the most famous parts of Jesus’ life, the Last Supper with his disciples. This scripture unearths many truths about God’s story in history, the past, present and future. The Passover celebration commemorated God’s salvation of Isreal during the last plague in Egypt. A lamb without blemish was slain as a sacrifice for each home in order to save those in the home. If the blood of the lamb was not on the doorway, the firstborn of that home died. During the Last Supper with the disciples, Jesus instituted a new instruction: to drink the wine and eat the bread in remembrance of Him. Jesus shares that a sacrifice will be made for the payment of sin (Matthew 26:28). Jesus goes on to tell the disciples that He will suffer and be betrayed soon by Judas. But He also gives hope, saying that He will eat and drink the Passover again when the kingdom of God is fulfilled.

Application

The Last Supper is a pivotal time in Jesus’ ministry. To fulfill God’s plan, Jesus became the final Passover sacrifice, an offering of God’s firstborn, His beloved Son, for the forgiveness of sin. Sin deserves to be judged by God, Whom is not only holy, but also the Master and Creator of all creation. Everything answers to Him. God commanded the nation of Isreal to celebrate the Passover every year to remember His promise of mercy and grace out of Egypt. However, in the Last Supper, Jesus introduces a new promise of salvation to all nations. Today, as Christ followers, we are instructed in 1 Corinthians 11 to continue the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper, eating the bread and drinking of the cup in remembrance of Jesus’ sacrifice for each one of us.

Questions to Consider

  1. What sin does this passage lead us to confess?
  2. How does this passage challenge us to repent and follow Jesus?
  3. Share one way you can grow in your faith and trust Jesus more.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the cross. Thank You for taking my sin and shame through Your son, Jesus. Help us to come to every Lord’s Supper in sincerity, reverence, honor, and truth. We praise You that through Jesus’ sacrifice, we are forgiven and can celebrate a new life with You. Turn our hearts toward You every day. Amen.
