Scripture: Judges 6-8
Because Life Groups did not meet this week, we encourage you to gather as a family to read the Scripture passages and discuss the Review Questions together. This allows you to stay on track with the material while creating a meaningful opportunity to explore God's Word with your family. For those with children, it's also a great way to demonstrate the importance of Scripture in our daily lives. We're praying for your family as you study God's Word together.

Main Idea: Gideon Led Israel (Judges 6-8)

Summary
  • The Israelites did what was evil in the Lord's sight. So, God handed them over to the Midianites. When the people cried out to God, He sent Gideon to save them.
  • Gideon tested God before he went to battle Midian.
  • God told Gideon he had too many troops and decreased his army to 300 men. Israel won the battle.

Review Questions
  1. How did Gideon test God's words?
  2. Why do you think God used a small army to defeat the Midianites?

Students

Main Idea: We can trust God to confirm His will for us. (Judges 6-8)

Summary
In Judges 6-8, God chooses a reluctant farmer named Gideon to rescue the Israelites from the Midianites, who have been raiding their land and destroying their crops. Though initially doubtful, Gideon follows God's instructions to gather an army, which God then reduces to just 300 men who defeat the much larger Midianite forces using only trumpets, jars, and torches to create confusion in the enemy camp. After this victory, Gideon pursues and captures the Midianite kings, yet refuses to become king himself when the people ask him. He says there is only one true King.

Review Questions
  1. Like Gideon, why do we often feel the need for more “proof” from God?
  2. Why did God dwindle Gideon’s army numbers down to 300?
  3. Why do we tend to lean on our own strength and not on God’s?

Adults

Main Idea: God Almighty strengthens us in our weakness. (Judges 6-7)

Summary
The Israelites are oppressed by the Midianites as punishment for their disobedience, leading God to call the reluctant farmer, Gideon, through an angel and confirming his selection through miraculous signs. Gideon follows God's commands to destroy his father's Baal altar and gathers an army to fight the Midianites, though he seeks additional confirmation through the famous fleece signs. God deliberately reduces Gideon's forces from 32,000 to just 300 men and reveals His strategy through an enemy's dream, culminating in a nighttime attack where Gideon's small band creates confusion in the Midianite camp with trumpets, broken jars, and torches, causing the enemy to flee in panic.

Review Questions
  1. Throughout the narrative, Gideon repeatedly seeks confirmation from God before taking action. How do you discern when to wait for clear direction in your life versus when to move forward with the guidance you've already received?
  2. Why do we tend to lean on our own strength and not on God’s?
