Main Idea: Disobedience blinds us and creates distance between us and God. (Judges 13-16)

Summary
The story of Samson is about a man with supernatural strength who was chosen by God to help free the Israelites from their enemies, the Philistines. Samson was to be a “Nazirite,” meaning he wasn’t supposed to drink alcohol, cut his hair, or come into contact with anything dead. Samson lost his strength when Delilah, a Philistine, tricked him and cut his hair while he slept. In the end, even though blinded and imprisoned by the Philistines, Samson's strength returned one last time, allowing him to push down the pillars of a temple and defeat the Philistines, though he died in the process.

Review Questions
  1. Samson trusted Delilah even though she tried to betray him three times. Why do you think he eventually told her the secret of his strength?
  2. Where do you see redemption in Samson’s story?

Adults

Main Idea: God can vindicate His people even through the seeming hopelessness of death. (Judges 13-16)

Summary
Judges 13-16 chronicles the life of Samson, a Nazirite from birth endowed with supernatural strength, who was chosen by God to begin delivering Israel from the Philistines. Throughout Samson’s prideful leadership, his personal weaknesses for women and vendettas against the Philistines repeatedly led him into compromising situations, culminating in his betrayal by Delilah who discovered the secret of his strength lay in his uncut hair. After being captured, blinded, and humiliated by the Philistines, Samson's final act was one of both vengeance and sacrifice, as he brought down the temple of Dagon upon himself and thousands of Philistines, killing more enemies in his death than in his life.
