Sermon: The Righteousness of God
Scripture
Romans 3:21-24 – But now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been revealed, attested by the Law and the Prophets. The righteousness of God is through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe, since there is no distinction. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; they are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.
Summary
The message of Romans is that the righteousness of God comes only through faith in Jesus Christ. Paul has been building a case, demonstrating that every single person in the world needs this righteousness.
God has established the standard of what is right, and He always acts in accordance with what is right, including in the way He has chosen to save sinners. However, we all have violated that standard, and because God is holy and just, our sin must be punished by His wrath.
That’s the bad news.
The good news is that the righteousness that God requires is the righteousness that He Himself provides through faith in Jesus Christ, not by works of the Law.
Righteousness Received
Those who place their faith in Jesus Christ are redeemed from bondage to sin and to Satan. Jesus gave His life as a ransom for many. He paid the penalty for our sin so those who trust in Him won’t be condemned and separated from God in hell for eternity.
Righteousness Demonstrated
Paul writes that God presented Jesus as the propitiation for our sin by His blood. So, God the Father, took the initiative to plan for His own wrath and anger toward sin, to be satisfied by setting forth His Son as the sacrifice.
Paul’s Conclusion
Paul has made it clear that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and a person can only be justified, or made right before God through faith in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Therefore, there is no place for boasting, no place for pride.
