Sermon

Title: Some Closing Reminders

Scripture: 1 John 5:14-21

Overview: As John nears the end of his letter, he offers a series of final reminders meant to strengthen believers’ confidence and clarity. He encourages the church to approach God with assurance in prayer, to remain alert to sin’s dangers, and to rest in the security and saving work of Jesus Christ.

Main Points:
  • Confident Praying
    • Our Assurance
    • Our Appeal
  • Critical Concerns
    • Offense
    • Obligation
  • Concluding Synopsis
    • Our Security
    • Our Struggle
    • Our Savior

Discussion Questions:
For Kids
  • What does it mean to talk to God with confidence?
  • How does Jesus help us when we pray?
  • What is one thing you can pray about this week?

For Students & Adults
  • Why do you think John connects confidence in prayer with obedience and discernment?
  • How does understanding your security in Christ shape the way you handle sin and temptation?
  • What reminder from this passage do you personally need most right now—assurance, clarity, or perseverance?

Application: Choose one area of your life where God is prompting you toward obedience or prayerful dependence. Commit to bringing that area before the Lord each day this week, trusting His assurance and strength.

Life Group

Scripture: Daniel 1

Christ/Gospel Connections:
All of Scripture points back to Jesus. In our study each week, every age group’s lesson includes a note about how the message connects to Christ. Use these Christ/Gospel Connections as a springboard for meaningful discussion about who Jesus is and what He has done for us.

Preschool – Daniel obeyed God even in small things, like what he ate. Jesus obeyed God in everything. When we trust in Jesus, God sees us as if we lived a perfect life, just like Jesus did.

Kids – Daniel was faithful to obey God, even in the small matters like eating the correct foods. Jesus was faithful to obey God in every way. When we trust in Jesus as Savior, God credits us with the perfect life Jesus lived.

Students – Christ promised to send a Helper when He returned to His throne in heaven (John 14:16-17). He sent the Holy Spirit to dwell within all believers, giving us guidance and wisdom so that we can live in a way that pleases the Lord.

Adults – Our obedience to God comes from faith in His character and works. He has always been faithful, even in suffering. Christ obeyed the Father through suffering. And from His example, our obedience to Christ demonstrates our faith in Him.

Discussion Questions:
For Kids
  • Why did Daniel choose to obey God even when others didn’t?
  • What are some “small” ways you can obey God this week?
  • How does Jesus help you obey?

For Students & Adults
  • Where do you feel pressure to compromise your obedience to God?
  • How does remembering who God says you are strengthen your resolve?
  • What step of obedience is God calling you to take in this season?

Pray Together

  • Thank God for His faithfulness in hearing our prayers and for giving us wisdom through His Spirit.
  • Commit to obeying God in both small and significant areas, trusting Him to shape your character.
  • Ask God to strengthen your confidence in prayer and guard your heart from anything that draws you away from Him.
