Genesis 2:24

This is why a man leaves his father and mother and bonds with his wife, and they become one flesh.

Today Pastor Brian continued our series Restore the Home as we looked at how to have a meaningful marriage. If our marriages are broken, then our homes are broken and the image of God is broken. But if our marriages are healthy, our homes can be healthy and the image of God can shine. As we learned last week, our true enemy is attacking marriages. He lies to cause division between husband and wife. God is a God of oneness. It’s our oneness that shines the glory of who God is and strengthens you and your family.

We must focus in two directions to experience oneness in your marriage:

1. Focus in the direction of Jesus not your spouse.
  • Pray in peace (Philippians 4:4-7)
  • Dwell on truth (Philippians 4:8)

2. Focus in the direction of connection not your problems.
  • Let love cover (1 Peter 4:8)
  • Build on strengths (2 Thessalonians 3:3)

  1. What stood out to you most from the message this morning?
  2. Share a time you focused on your spouse and dwelled on what was bad. How did you find peace and forgiveness after? How would focusing on Jesus and dwelling on truth have helped?
  3. Discuss how focusing on connection rather than problems might strengthen the bond of your marriage. What is one area you can “let love cover”?
  4. Take a moment and list three good strengths of your marriage. Make the same list about your spouse. Take some time to share those with each other. Receive what your spouse says and build on strengths.

Thank God for the gift of marriage and family. Confess where you have fallen short of shining the image of God to your spouse and in your marriage. Ask God to forgive you, to heal any brokenness, to give you peace, and to give you the love that covers sins. Commit to fight for oneness in your marriage.
